Abstract

1506184 Anodizing aluminium; electroplating OXY METAL INDUSTRIES CORP 23 May 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 22802/75 Heading C7B Al or Al alloy to be electro-plated with Ni then Cr is first anodized in an aqueous bath comprising by volume 5 to 12% H 3 PO 4 , 0À4 to 2% H 2 SO 4 and 1 to 7% saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, or amino or hydroxy derivative thereof, e.g. formic, acetic, hydroxyacetic or amino acetic acid. Prior to anodizing, the Al surface is preferably cleaned, etched e.g. in HNO 3 and NH 4 F-HF, and rinsed. The anodized Al may be electro-plated in turn with a Ni strike from a low chloride Watts bath, semi-bright Ni or acid Cu, bright Ni and finally Cr. Al alloys specified contain up to 10% Zn and 5% other metal e.g. 1 to 1À5% Mn.
