Abstract

1347936 Electro-plating copper on aluminium CANADA WIRE & CABLE CO Ltd 11 April 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 16573/72 Addition to 1309497 Heading C7B Cu is electro-plated directly on Al metal or alloy in an aqueous alkaline (pH 8-13) plating bath containing a cupric salt e.g. nitrate, sulphate, acetate or chloride, and as complexing agent a mixture of an amine and ammonia capable of forming Cu (amine)<SP>++</SP> and Cu (NH 3 ) 4 <SP>++</SP> complexes, in amounts sufficient to complex all cupric ions, the amount of the Cu (NH 3 ) 4 <SP>++</SP> complex being from 10 to 30% of the total complex ions. The bath may contain F ions, e.g. NaF, KF or NH 4 F, wetting and brightening agents. The method may be used for the continuous Cu plating of wires, strips, sheets and other flexible workpieces of Al for subsequent soldering or welding. The Al workpiece may be degreased and cleaned, e.g. by passing it successively in alkaline (NaOH or NaHCO 3 ) and acid (HCl or HNO 3 ) baths with intermediate rinses, prior to plating. The Cu plated Al may be further plated with other metal, e.g. Zn, Sn or Ni. Examples of amines are (di- or tri-)ethylamine, triethanolamine, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, tetracthylenepentamine, hexamethylenetetramine, triethylenetetramine and pyridine; the ammonia is present in the form of ammonium hydroxide.
