Abstract

1456769 Multiple-layer electro-plating BUCKBEE-MEARS CO 23 Aug 1974 [30 Jan 1974] 37111/74 Heading C7B A solderable coating is applied to a metallic article, e.g. of Ni-Fe, Ni-Fe-Co, Cu or ferrous alloy, by cleaning to remove organic and inorganic material, applying an electrolytic Cu strike, immersing the still-wet article into a Cu-Ag bath after applying an electro-plating voltage to the article whereby an Ag strike is electrolytically plated, and finally electro-plating a solderable layer e.g. of Ag, thereon. Cyanide plating baths may be used. The Ag strike bath may contain less than 1 oz/ U.S. gallon of AgCN for use at 75‹F at 1.5V for one minute (all figures Œ 10%). Cleaning may involve sequential anodic cleaning in KOH or NaOH pickling in HCl and anodic cleaning in KCN, a chelating agent or Na gluconate.
