Abstract
651,707. Electrolytic treatment of tin surfaces. CARNEGIE-ILLINOIS STEEL CORPORATION. Dec. 31, 1948, No. 33657. Convention date, Oct. 27. [Class 41] A method of treating electrolytically sheet material having a tin surface, in order to prevent sulphide staining and increase the adherence of lacquer, consists in making the material a cathode in a solution containing a passivating radical, thereby reducing the oxide film initially existing on the material, then finally making the material an anode while still in the solution, thereby re-oxidizing the tin surface and forming thereon a water-insoluble film of a complex combination of the oxide and the radical. The radical may be a phosphate, chromate, or a phosphate mixed with a chromate, for example sodium di-hydrogen phosphate and sodium dichromate. In the arrangement shown, tinned steel strip is unwound from a coil 10 and passed through a bath containing a passivating radical in a tank 11 provided with spaced pairs of electrodes 15, 16. A current source 17 is connected to the electrodes 15 so as to make the portion of the strip between them the cathode. A similar source 18 is connected to the electrodes 16 to make the portion of the strip between them the anode.
