Abstract

908,330. Electric coils; inductances. ANACONDA ALUMINUM CO. Feb. 10, 1961 [Feb. 25, 1960; Jan. 4, 1961], No. 5033/61. Classes 35 and 38 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] Electrically insulated aluminium strip, suitable for use in winding electrical, coils, is made by applying a continuous dielectric coating to at least one side of the strip, cutting the strip into narrower strips, winding the narrower strips into rolls and treating the end faces of the rolls, e.g. by anodizing, to form continuous oxidic dielectric films on the cut edges. The continuous dielectric coating may be organic, e.g. varnish or lacquer, a polyvinyl acetal or a silicone enamel and may be coated on the strip by applicator rolls. Alternatively, the coating may be inorganic, e.g. an anodic film. In anodizing to produce a film on the cut edges, the electrolyte may be chromic, sulphuric, oxalic phosphoric or sulphamic acid or caustic alkali. Low voltage D.C. or sometimes A.C. is passed through the bath using a lead or stainless steel cathode. During electrolysis, small slivers and burrs are removed from the edges and the oxide film is formed. To prevent organic coatings on a coil from plasticizing in hot solutions and to prevent electrolyte from entering between the turns of a coil during anodizing, the turns may be sealed by a compound such as a hydrocarbon oil either by wiping it on the strip before coiling it or by pressing the faces of the coil against a pad saturated with the compound. Before anodizing, the sealing material is removed from the edges, e.g. in a bath of caustic solution. After anodizing, the finished rolls may be submerged in a hot water rinse. The rolls may be rewound.
