Abstract
725,681. Flexible oxide coatings on aluminium. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 4, 1953 [Feb. 15, 1952], No. 3169/53. Class 41. A method of providing an aluminium surface with a flexible oxide coating consists in anodically oxidizing the surface in an aqueous solution of oxalic acid and thereafter immersing the oxide-coated surface in an aqueous solution of oxalic acid at a temperature of at least 80 ‹ C. The surface may be anodized in a solution of from 1 to 10 per cent oxalic acid for 1 to 3 minutes at a temperature up to 50‹ C. followed by immersion in a solution of from 2.5 to 10 per cent oxalic acid, preferably at a temperature between 84 and 95‹ C. for between 30 and 120 seconds. An aluminium wire may be passed continuously through a cleaning bath of ethyl alcohol and ethylene dichloride, wiped and dried and through an anodizing bath and then immediately into an oxalic acid bath. The wire may then be coated with a resin, such as a polymeric monochlortrifluorethylene resin. The wire may consist of a copper core covered with an aluminium or aluminium alloy surface coating.
