Abstract
579,824. Detectors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO:, Ltd., and RANSLEY, C. E. Aug. 11, 1943, No. 13025. [Class 40 (v)] The manufacture of a crystal rectifier includes as a last stage a process wherein the operative part of the crystal surface is made cathodic in an electrolyte. The crystal which is mainly silicon, may contain a small amount of aluminium or beryllium and may be prepared by the method described in Specification 577,181, [Group III], which may include subjecting the surface to an oxidising process. For the electrolytic treatment, the crystal, preferably mounted in a metal cup, has its surface immersed in an electrolyte such as dilute hydrofluoric or sulphuric acid, together with an inert anode such as platinum wire, the crystal and the anode being connected to an external source of current. The source of current may be dispensed with if the crystal is mounted in a cup made of a metal which is electro-positive to the crystal, e.g. brass. In this case, the crystal and cup are immersed in the dilute electrolyte.
