Abstract
A piston formed from an aluminium base alloy containing 10-19 per cent of silicon, 0,5-5 per cent of copper, 0,2-3 per cent of magnesium, and 0,3-5 per cent of nickel, with or without 0,1-1 per cent of manganese, is provided with an oxide coating. A preferred alloy contains 12 per cent of silicon, 0,8 per cent of copper, 1,2 per cent of magnesium, and 2,4 per cent of nickel. The piston may be oxidized chemically but is preferably immersed as anode in a bath containing sulphuric acid, preferably 20 per cent and oxalic acid, preferably 5 per cent, and a current of 13 amps. per square foot is applied at 14 volts for thirty minutes. Lubricant may be applied to the oxide coating. Specification 409,679, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
