Abstract
862,908. Anodizing aluminium and alloys thereof. TAYLOR, P. H. Dec. 7, 1959, No. 41543/59. Class 41. An abrasion-resistant oxide coating is formed on an aluminium surface by electrolytic oxidation using as electrolyte an aqueous solution containing mellitic acid and either sulphuric, oxalic, chromic, or phosphoric acid, or a mixture of these. The aluminium treated includes alloys containing up to 16% of other metals including Cu, Mg, Si and Zn. With the aluminium article as anode, the current density is first adjusted to 6 A.S.F. and then increased in steps up to 36 or 40 A.S.F. In examples, aluminium or an alloy is treated at 0‹ to 45‹ F. with an aqueous solution containing 0.5 to 1.5% mellitic acid and up to 10 to 13% oxalic or sulphuric acid, or up to 40% of phosphoric acid.
