Abstract

1,235,661. Anodizing aluminium. ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. March 15, 1968 [March 30, 1967], No.14691/67. Heading C7B. An aluminium or aluminium alloy strip is provided with a thin e.g. 0À05 micron oxide coating by passing it through an aqueous sulphuric acid bath at a temperature of not less than 50‹C. but below the bath boiling point so as to have a dwell time in the bath of 0À5 to 15 seconds and passing A.C. between the strip and at least one electrode in the bath to provide a current density at the strip surface of at least 20 amps./sq. ft. Preferably the aqueous bath contains at least 20 to 25% sulphuric acid by weight and is used at 80 to 100‹ C. with a current density of 60 to 160 amps. / sq. ft. with a dwell time of 2 to 7À5 seconds. The resultant oxide coating has comparatively large craters (300 to 400A diameter) which provides a good anchorage for lacquers used in the canning industries so that the lacquer coating is not detached by mechanical deformation of the strip in can manufacture. Comparative tests are given for an aluminium alloy containing 2% Mg and 0À25% Mn subjected to different current densities and bath dwell times. The process may be effected by feeding the strip through a shallow tank divided into strip entry and exit and two central compartments by partitions having a slot with a rubber gasket through which the strip passes, the slot in the central partition having a rubber gasket, counter electrodes being arranged parallel to opposite faces of the strip in the two central compartments and connected so that current passes along the strip which is alternately cathodic and anodic. Prior degreasing of the strip is unnecessary. As an alternative the electrolyte may be fed in counterflow to the strip movement so that grease on the strip is prevented from contaminating the oxide coating, electrolyte containing freed grease overflowing a weir at the strip entry end of the tank.
