Abstract

A bath for electrolytic polishing or chemical brightening the surface of an aluminium or aluminium alloy article consists of sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and/or an acid salt thereof and water, corresponding to a mixture of H2SO4 of s.g. 1.84 and H3PO4 of s.g. 1.72 in volume ratios at 72 DEG F. ranging from 70% H2SO4 over 30% H3PO4 to 85% H2SO4 over 15% H3PO4, the total water-free acid content of the bath being 88.4-90.5% by volume. The bath may additionally contain 0.001-0.01% by weight of a silver salt such as the nitrate or cyanide, and the H2SO4 may be partly replaced by an alkali metal salt thereof such as the sulphate or bisulphate. The article is dipped into the bath heated to 200-300 DEG F., e.g. for chemical brightening at least 230 DEG F. and for electrolytic polishing at most 250 DEG F. A combination process may be effected in the one bath heated to 230-250 DEG F. by first immersing the article without the passage of an electric current, then turning on the current, e.g. using 8-15 volts with 40-150 A.S.F. for polishing. After treatment, a protective film may be applied by anodizing before drying or lacquering after drying.
