Abstract
Steel wire is electroplated with zinc, providing a homogeneous corrosion resistant surface, for use in welding. A suitable electrolyte contains zinc sulphate, magnesium sulphate, and sufficient H2SO4 to bring the pH value to about 3. Preferably the wire is first pickled in acid and then coated continuously by passing it through a U-shaped conductor as anode immersed in the electrolyte at about 300 m. per minute, at 40 A.S.Dm., to give a coating not less than 0.1m thick. The coating may comprise up to 0.5% by weight of the steel wire.
