Abstract

The surface of a Ti or Ti base alloy article is etched by contacting with an aqueous solution of (COOH)2 at e.g. 70 DEG C., to provide a matt etched surface suitable for the deposition of a coating of e.g. a metal by electrolysis or chemical or thermal decomposition or a non-metal e.g. p.t.f.e. by gaspolymerization or vapour deposition. After etching the Ti may be rinsed and electroplated with Pt to a thickness of 100 micro inches and then used as anode in an electrolytic cell containing saturated NaCl solution as electrolyte and having a Ti cathode.
