Abstract

<PICT:0952171/C3/1> An anode, especially useful in nickel and chromium plating, and giving good "throwing power", is made by plating titanium with platinum and then heating the coating at 400-800 DEG C., whereby the two metals interdiffuse. A second coating of platinum may then be applied followed by a second heat treatment, which does not require a special atmosphere. Preferably the titanium base is treated with a solution of HNO3 and HF, and after rinsing, alkali wash, and rinsing, is treated with strong HBF4 at 120-150 DEG C. The titanium is then washed and plated wholly or in selected areas using PtCl4 and HCl or H3PO4. The plated metal is then heated at 400-800 DEG C. for 15 seconds up to 1 hour. The electrode may be used to function as an auxiliary anode, e.g. in the form of thick rods 5, 51 of the platinum plated anodes connected through a titanium rod 4 and spaced from recessed objects to be plated 2, 21 gripped in a holder 1. The arrangement gives a high current density and improved plating in the recessed areas. Specification 952,172 is referred to.
