Abstract
Nickel or a nickel-containing alloy e.g. chromium-nickel austenitic steel or nickel-silver alloy, is coloured by the passage of A.C. while immersed as an electrode in an aqueous alkaline solution containing alkali metal cations and hydroxide ions or an oxy-anion of carbon, aluminium, silicon or phosphorus, chromium, vanadium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten or titanium. A soluble chloride may also be included in the bath, while in the case of baths containing oxy-ions of chromium, vanadium or manganese a small proportion of sulphuric acid is preferably included. D.C. e.g. from an auxiliary electrode may be superimposed on the A.C. which may be applied between a pair of articles to be coloured. The treated article may be subsequently dyed. Reference is made to trating nickel alloys containing copper with or without zinc or nickel-chromium alloy. The preferred A.C. frequency is between 15 and 100 c/s and current densities between 100 and 1000 amps/sq.ft. are employed.
