Abstract
In a method of manufacturing silver-oxide-alkali metal photocathodes, a silver substrate is subjected to cycles of electrolytic oxidation and reduction to increase the surface area of the silver substrate. In particular, a semi-cylindrical silver cathode, or a silver layer on a glass base, after cleaning in a solvent, then HNO3, and treating with hydrogen at 650 DEG C, is immersed in an electrolytic bath of potassium hydroxide solution together with a silver wire electrode. The C.D. is adjusted to 1 mA per sq. cm., and alternate oxidation and reduction is effected every 10 mins by reversing the polarity of the current through the electrolyzing circuit, Fig. 1 (not shown). The cycle is repeated 12 times, and then coating is then washed and dried.
