Abstract

921,016. Making cathodes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 14, 1959 [July 17, 1958], No. 24164/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XL (a)] A cathode is made from a number of thin tungsten wires coated with a tungsten-bronze alloy by forming them into a bunch and fixing one end of the bunch into a holder by arc welding. The coating is then removed from the portions of the wires projecting outside the holder and the free ends of the wire are dipped into a bath of sodium nitrite which rises between the wires by capillary action; the etching process being accelerated by the local application of heat. The etching serves to produce a fine point on the end of each of the wires and these are then washed clean of the sodium nitrite.
