Abstract

582,602. Soldering grids of thermionic valves. BROAD, D. A. G. July 11, 1944, No. 13282. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Metal parts such as wires or tapes, particularly for grids for use in hollow resonators of electron discharge devices, are united to each other at spaced points without the aid of a flux by applying an adhering coating to the parts of a metal of lower melting point and heating the parts in vacuo at such a high temperature below the melting point of the parts so as to cause the spaced points to unite, the heating being continued to remove the coating from the parts intermediate the spaced points. Any excess of coating metal is thus evaporated during the operation. The parts may consist of copper and the coating metal of silver and heating may be effected at a temperature below or above the melting point of the coating metal. The tape or wire may alternatively be of nickel and the coating metal of gold. The coating may be applied by electrodeposition or by rolling. A grid formed by crimping a copper tape 0.001 inch thick provided with a coating of silver 0.0001 inch thick, bending back a straight portion over the apices of the crimps and bending into a flat spiral is united at its contacting points and in the aperture in the copper resonator of the discharge device by placing the coated grid in the aperture, inserting in a vessel which is evacuated by continuous pumping and heated by electric induction at a temperature of about 880‹ to 900‹ C. for one minute. The silver units with the copper to form a eutectic alloy having a melting point of 800‹ to 850‹ C. Specification 286,823, [Class 83 (iv)], is referred to.
