Abstract
729,611. Electron-beam apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 20, 1953, No. 7823/53. Class 39 (1). An electron gun for the production of a high current density beam which is to be magnetically focused as for Brillouin type flow, comprises a cathode 2, a focusing electrode 4 and a. ferromagnetic disc anode pole-piece 7 within a ferromagnetic sleeve 12. An inner sleeve 8, preferably of ferromagnetic material, has two portions of different internal diameter to provide a shoulder 9 for locating the cathode and focusing electrode. An annular washer 10 of insulating material such as mica seats against the shoulder 9 and against a flange 5 on the focusing electrode. In an electron discharge tube the electrode assembly is pressed against the annular end 13 of the sleeve 12 by the rods 18 secured between a lower flange 6 of the focusing electrode 4 and the terminal pins 17. The sleeve 12 forms part of the envelope, and is preferably of an iron-nickelcobalt alloy or of a 50: 50 nickel-iron alloy for sealing to glass portions 15, 19 of the envelope. The envelope may be entirely of metal. Specification 674,758 is referred to.
