Abstract

644,985. Cathode-ray tubes. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 18, 1945, No. 27404. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] An electron gun comprises a tubular cathode 1 closed at one end by a cap 2 having a flat thermionically emitting portion and provided at its open end with a flat annular flange 3 ; a heater unit 10 enclosed by the cathode ; a cup-shaped grid electrode 5 surrounding the cathode and having a disc portion 6 with an aperture 7 aligned with the flat portion of the cathode and diametrically opposed tabs 8 and 9 ; two axially aligned ceramic discs 21 and 22 between which the cathode flange 3 is tightly held, one of said discs 21 having a central opening forming a tight fit around the cathode and the other of said discs 22 having attached thereto pairs of metal straps 13, 14 and 15, 16 attached to the terminal legs 11 and 12 of the cathode heater 10 ; and cylinder 17 with annularly flanged shield 18 and retainer ring 19 with flange 20 clamping together the discs 21, 22 and cathode flange 3. The shield 18 has a conical extension 18a and a centrally apertured flat portion 18b. The cathode tab 23 is welded to the cathode flange 3. Other gun electrodes may be mounted above and attached to the grid electrode. The grid electrode 5, 6 and the cathode unit formed of the remaining members are relatively positioned by inserting a fixed length of the gauge pin of a micrometer dial gauge through the aperture 7 of the grid disc 6, pushing the cathode unit into the grid cylinder 5 to engage the flat cathode end with the free end of the micrometer gauge pin and continuing pushing the cathode unit into the grid cylinder until the micrometer dial indicates a desired depth of the gauge pin within the grid aperture and welding the grid cylinder 5 to the cylinder 17.
