Abstract

596,648. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 17, 1944, No. 22860. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device comprises a cathode 28 surrounded by a grid 30 consisting of spaced wires 32, Fig. 2, fixed at one end to an annular cap 34, the other ends being outwardly flared and clamped between two rings 36 and 38 by rivets 40. A tie wire 41 may be wound round the spaced wires and the rings 36 and 38 may have U-shaped crosssection as shown. The grid is surrounded by a cylindrical carbon anode 14 with an integral tapered extension 16 having, in an annular groove, a molybdenum ring 18 which is welded to a molybdenum sleeve' 20 fitting over the extension, closed at its upper end by a copper plug 22 and supported in the envelope by being crimped into a copper cap 24 sealed to the envelope. An extension 42 from the ring 38 is sealed to the envelope as described in Specification 596,647 to form a vacuum tight support and lead connection. The envelope is made in two hemispherical parts 10 and 12 sealed together before evacuation.
