Abstract

983,158. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 2, 1962, No. 120/62. Heading H1D. The envelope of a discharge tube includes two coaxial, insulating collars 4, 5 spaced apart by a trough-shaped metal ring 14, and an annular metal member 9 having cylindrical end portions sealed respectively to ring 14 and collar 5. A tubular electrode support 15 is mounted inside the envelope solely by a cylindrical end thereof being butt-joined to the base of the trough of ring 14. The envelope may comprise three or more collars 3-5, of ceramic, as shown, or of glass, Fig. 2 (not shown), spaced by metal envelope sections to which are secured electrode supports 11, 13, 15 and anode 1, and terminals 16-18. The final envelope seal before exhaustion through tubulation 21 is effected at 19 between ring 14 and member 9. A directly-heated cathode may be secured between supports 11 and 13 and a grid to support 15. A similar envelope construction may be employed for tetrode or pentode valves.
