Abstract
659,797. Thermionic valves; X-ray tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Oct. 30, 1945, No. 28729. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device such as a rectifier, X-ray tube or radio tube comprises a tube 14 with a columbium surface, the upper part of which encloses a filament 10 and serves as a cathode and the lower part 19 of which is less hot in operation and serves as a getter. The tube 14 may be of pure columbium or a tungsten or molybdenum support coated with columbium, and may be heated by radiation and/or by electron bombardment from the filament 10. The cathode and getter portions operate at 1700- 1900‹ K. and 600- 1700 K. respectively. The tube 14 preferably has a closed top 20 as shown to shield the filament 10 from the electrostatic field. The device shown in the drawing is a rectifier, and has a metal or glass envelope (glass as shown). The cup-shaped anode 3 and cathode 14 are supported from sheet-metal members 7 sealed to re-entrant envelope portions 5 at 8. The cathode supporting arrangements comprise metal head 11 carrying a tubular skirt 13 which encloses the seal at the lower end of the envelope, and a stud 12 which supports the head 11. The ends of filament 10 are connected to leads 15, 16 by molybdenum wire wrappings 18, and the leads 15, 16 pass insulatedly through head 11 by means of grommets, the openings in which are sealed by globules of glass, and are connected to further leads 17 which pass through further grommets in the end metal member 7 to the exterior of the device. The tube 4, 19 may be electrically connected to the head 11 so that stud 12 can serve as an electrical lead thereto, or may be insulated from the head in which case it is connected to one of the stems 15,16. One of the stems 15, 16 may be grounded on the head 11, and in this case the tube 4, 19 may be connected to either the grounded or the insulated stem, but if connected to the latter, the tube 4, 19 must also be insulated from head 11.
