Abstract

774,452. Discharge tubes. MACHLETT LABORATORIES, Inc. May 27, 1955 [June 22, 1954], No. 15397/55. Class 39(1). In a gas-filled tube such as a thyratron, the envelope has an opening at one end, with an outwardly extending neck 29 encircling the opening, and an inwardly extending coaxial support 30 which carries a control electrode ; the anode 25 is supported by a tubular .member 27 lying within the opening, one end of this member being sealed to the outer end of the neck and the other end to the anode, so that anode and member close the opening. The member-to-neck seal may be made with an intermediate collar 28 of appropriate material, which may be spaced from the member 27 by a ring, Fig. 3 (not shown). An extension 27a on 27 protects the seal from discharge effects. The other end of the member is brazed to block 26 secured to the rearward surface of the anode. This side is thus exposed to the atmosphere for cooling. The neck 29 closely surrounds the member 27, and is continued within the envelope, as at 30, to provide the support for the grid structure. This is a cylindrical member 31, 32, closed at one end by a wall 35, and extending at the other end below the level of the open end of the cathode 18. The grid itself is a perforated disc 33 ; an additional disc 34, whose perforations are offset from those in disc 33, gives better control over the firing of the thyratron. In the modification of Fig. 3 (not shown) the anode and grid surfaces are tubular and concentric, instead of planar and parallel, with a deionization skirt depending from the grid structure. The gas filling may be hydrogen, with a gas generator 37 within the envelope for maintaining the pressure.
