Abstract

931,760. Gaseous discharge tubes. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd., B. O. BAKER, and R. J. WHELDON. Jan. 19, 1962 [Jan. 20, 1961], No. 2484/61. Class 39 (1). The envelope of a gas-filled discharge tube comprises a ceramic ring 5 sealed between a metallic closure member 24 and. a hollow, generally metallic structure 1, 2 within which the electrode system is disposed. The main discharge path lies on the side of the anode 13 remote from ring 5, and the anode is electrically connected to closure member 24. The closure member and/or the hollow structure overlaps the ceramic ring without touching it so that the shortest path between the closure member and the hollow structure is longer via the inner surface of the ceramic than it is via the gas-filling. As shown, a thyratron is filled with deuterium and includes a gas replenisher 19. The electrode system includes a heatshielded cathode 10, baffles 14, 16 and control electrode 15 supported in the hollow structure 1, 2 of copper. Envelope section 2 has a narrow end part and closure member 24 is recessed at 25 to provide the long surface leakage path. Envelope dimensions are given. Ceramic backing rings 6, 26 relieve stresses in the copper-ceramic seals. The external surface of ceramic ring 5 is glazed.
