952,600. Discharge lamps. EGYESULT IZZOLAMPA ES VILLAMOSSAGI RESZVENYTARSASAG. Dec. 4, 1959 [Dec. 6, 1958], No. 41287/59. Heading H1D. A low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp, Fig. 1, has a circular cylindrical tubular bulb 1 containing rare gas and mercury, the inner surface of which is coated with fluorescent material and having at each end an electrode 10, 11 supported by lead-in conductors extending out of the end of a substantially cylindrical glass stem 8, 9, the electrodes being arranged at such a distance F from each other that the energy consumption of the lamp, operating at its rated voltage, exceeds 40 or 45 milliwatts per sq. cm. of the external surface area of the bulb between the electrodes, and at least one of the electrodes being at a distance t from the adjacent sealed end of the bulb which is at least 1.5 or 1.8 times the external diameter D of the bulb, the arrangement being such that a substantially unobstructed inner cross-section is provided inside the bulb for the passage of mercury vapour from the space between the electrodes towards the sealed end of the bulb. The distance t may be 3D. The cylindrical parts of the stems 8, 9 can have an external diameter d less than half the external diameter D of the bulb, preferably about one-third of D. Specific dimensions and energy consumptions are stated. Reference is made to a cold spot having a temperature of about 38-42 C. The rare gas filling can be 80% by volume of neon and 20% of argon at a pressure of about 2 Torr. Shields 10a, 11a are provided on two sides of each electrode 10, 11, which can be of the oxide-coated coiled-coil tungsten wire type. The exhaust tube 15 extends into the stem 9. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the electrode 11 is contained in a perforated sheet-metal shield 14. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the electrode 16 is positioned inside a metallic tube 17 welded to electrode-supporting wire 18, the tube 17 not touching the electrode-supporting wire 19.
