Abstract

945,762. Electric discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 4, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960], No. 31710/61. Heading H1D. A gaseous electric discharge lamp, for instance an arc lamp, comprises a hermeticallysealed envelope 2 of refractory insulating material, for example quartz, provided with two spaced electrodes 4, 5 therein and contains an ionizable medium including, as a regenerative getter, iodine vapour, characterized in that at least one of the electrodes is of tungsten and that the heat-dissipating capacity of said electrode is correlated to the energy loading of the device such that during operation the electrode has a molten tip 6, any tungsten vaporized from the electrode being returned thereto by means of said iodine vapour. Preferably, both electrodes are identical and generally rod-like having in operation a surface tension supportedmolten ball-point the diameter of which is less than ten and preferably less than three times the diameter of the rod-like portion. The amount of free iodine present should be between 0.01 to 1 micromole per c.c. of envelope volume and mixed with an inert gas, such as argon or krypton. Pressures of 40 mm. Hg. 70 mm. Hg. and in the ranges of 1-10 and 10-100 atmospheres are specifically mentioned and the tube envelope temperature is stated to be greater than 250‹ C., preferably 1000‹ C.
