Abstract
1,006,100. Fluorescent discharge lamps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 24, 1962 [June 23, 1961], No. 20057/62. Heading H1D. A fluorescent discharge lamp has an ionizable medium of mercury vapour and a filling gas of neon of a mixture of neon and argon wherein neon constitutes at least 80% of the mixture by volume at a pressure of 0.5 to 2.5 mm. in the cold condition, and has a cool region therein, the envelope having in the cool region a diameter D and length L such that the cool region has a normal operating temperature of 30‹ to 35‹ C. The filling gas can be 100% neon at a pressure of about 2 mm., or 90% neon and 10% argon at a pressure of about 2 mm. The envelope can have a diameter greater than 1.5 inches, and preferably 2# inches and a loading in excess of 16 watts per foot during normal operation. Heat deflecting shields 23 and 24 of nickel are provided.
