Abstract
1330045 Fluorescent discharge lamps MATSUSHITA ELECTRONICS CORP 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970] 22854/71 Heading H1D In a fluorescent discharge lamp having a rated lamp current of less than 125 mA the inside diameter B of at least one of the end tube portions which contains one of a pair of electrodes 3, 4 is between 8 and 13 mm. and the inside diameter A of the intermediate tube portion is between 6 and 8 mm. The electrodes 3 and 4 are coils containing an electron-emitting substance. Curves are provided (Figs. 2-5, not shown) showing the effect of the dimensions A and B on tube current, temperature at the closed end, relative brightness, light flux per unit length and relative light efficiency for lamps in which C = 15 mm. and l = 40 mm. Dimension B must be sufficiently large to prevent blackening of the envelope by oxides from the electrodes. The filling is mercury plus a rare gas at a pressure of several mm. Hg. and the tube wall should be maintained at a temperature of about 40‹ C. for optimumexcitation of the fluorescent coating 2. If the lamp is operated on D.C. only one electronemitting electrode is necessary and the other electrode may be a plain piece of metal. The dimension A is then maintained uniform to the end of the tube at which the latter electrode is located (Fig. 6, not shown).
