Abstract

1424102 Fluorescent discharge lamps IONLITE Ltd 13 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 24866/73 Heading H1D In a fluorescent lamp having an envelope 10 filled with an ionizing medium, e.g. mercury vapour and argon, and electrodes 14, 15 (which may be sintered), the evelope has a portion 12 of reduced volume at or towards one electrode so that any drift of ionizing medium (e.g. mercury) results in a pressure difference which controls or counters, at least partially, the drift of the ionizing medium. The portions 11, 12 of different cross-sectional areas may be coaxial and of the same length, as shown; or the portions may form the arms of a U-tube (Fig. 2, not shown). The envelope may have constant wall thickness and progressively changing cross-section; or alternatively constant crosssection and progressively changing wall thickness.
