Abstract

1,003,873. Metal-vapour lamps. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. Jan. 16, 1964 [Feb. 14, 1963], No.5956/63. Heading H1D. The envelope of an electrodeless high frequency discharge lamp containing metal vapour is in the form of two parts in open communication with each other through a capillary passage, the discharge being excited by electromagnetic means held in a position adjacent to but not touching the envelope. The glass envelope 1 of an ultra-violet lamp includes a capillary portion 2, and if filled with mercury vapour and argon at a total pressure of 9 tons, the discharge being maintained either by a coil 7, as shown, or by a pair of electrodes disposed either side of the envelope. The discharge is initiated by producing an auxiliary discharge outside the lamp between two electrodes embedded in one of the lamp supports 3A, and joined by a channel formed in the support adjacent the envelope (Fig. 2, not shown). Other filling constituents referred to include the alkali and alkaline earth metals, magnesium, zinc, cadmium and krypton. Specifications 732,700, 740,374, 786,516 and 816,849 are referred to.
