Abstract

1392883 TR switches WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 25 July 1972 [18 Aug 1971] 34671/72 Heading H1D An electrodeless gaseous discharge device suitable for use as a radar receiver protector comprises a capsule 30, an ionizable gas within said capsule, and Ti or Y having adsorbed therein tritium providing a source of primary radiation for said discharge device. The capsule 26, e.g. of quartz comprises a cup-shaped portion 30 and a capillary portion 24. Molecular tritium is adsorbed into a film 32 of Ti or Y vacuum-deposited on a quartz cover-plate 28. A layer 34 of TiO 2 or Y 2 O 3 is formed on the undersurface of layer 32 by aging in an oxygen atmosphere. Finally a layer 36 of SiO 2 is deposited over layer 34. The capsule is filled with a halogen, preferably chlorine at a pressure of about 10<SP>-4</SP> torr, and is inserted through the wall of a waveguide so that the capillary 24 lies in a gap 20 formed in an iris plate 12 to form a protector for a radar receiver.
