Abstract

1389620 Gas discharge lamps; electrode materials PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Sept 1973 [12 Sept 1972] 42133/73 Heading HID A gas or vapour discharge lamp has at least one internal electrode constructed from a three layer material comprising a layer of iron between layers of nickel and aluminium, the thickness of aluminium being less than 15 microns and the said electrode having been heat-treated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. hydrogen or a vacuum, at a temperature of at least 700‹ C. for a maximum of 15 minutes. The nickel layer can be provided with an emissive coating of a triple carbonate of barium, strontium and calcium which is decomposed by heating. The lamp can be of the glow discharge type, Fig. 1 (not shown) when the electrode is of a dished shape with the nickel layer facing the discharge, or an arc, lamp Fig. 2 (not shown) with two cylindrical electrodes made as above and with the nickel layer innermost with co-axial starting electrodes. The filling can be neon, argon and mercury.
