Abstract

1,222,834. Metal-vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 13 March, 1968 [17 March 1967], No. 12279/68. Heading HID. A discharge lamp for use in producing photochemical reactions comprises an envelope 5 of U.V. transmissive material with a filling consisting of an inert starting gas and a quantity of vaporizable metallic halide 22, other than the fluoride, of Zn and/or Cd. The starting gas may be Xe, A or Kr at a pressure of 10 to 500 torr. ZnCl 2 producing vapour at a partial pressure of 0 to 10 torr in operation is the preferred halide. With ZnCl 2 the temperature of the coldest portion of the envelope in operation is from 300‹ to 500‹ C. and a glow discharge is maintained with an operating voltage of 40 to 200 v. at a current of 25 to 200 ma. Envelope 5, e.g. of quartz or yttria, is supported in an outer glass envelope 1 which may be evacuated or may have a filling of U.V. transmissive inert gas or nitrogen.
