Abstract
1,217,799. Metal-vapour lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 25 Nov., 1969 [29 Nov., 1968], No. 57696/69. Heading H1D. The arc tube of a high pressure lamp has a filling including I, Hg, Sm and Sc, the I and Hg being present at an atomic ratio of from 0À10 to 0À85 and the Hg being present in sufficient quantity to be completely vaporized at the operating temperature of the arc tube and to form a restricted arc therein. The mercury may be present as the metal or as the iodide in an amount of 2À5 x 10<SP>-5</SP> to 4À1 x 10<SP>-5</SP> gram atoms per cm. of arc length. An atomic ratio of I to Hg of 0À45 is preferred. The Sm and Sc may be present in a total quantity of 0À046 x 10<SP>-5</SP> to 1À1 x 10<SP>-5</SP> gram atom per cm. of arc length, the optimum value being about 0À22 x 10<SP>-5</SP>. The atomic ratio of Sm to Sc may be from 1¢:1 to 1: 2. An alkali metal, preferably Cs, which forms a low vapour pressure iodide, may be added in a quantity of 5À25 x 10<SP>-7</SP> to 6À8 x 10<SP>-5</SP> gram atom per cm. of arc length to stabilize the arc and to ensure that at room temperature there is little or no iodine present in the vapour state. A rare gas such as He, A, Ne, Kr or Xe at a pressure of about 25 torr. is added to facilitate starting. The lamp is otherwise as described in Specification 1,028,228.
