Abstract
1,143,452. Metal-vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 6 April, 1967 [26 April, 1966], No. 15751/67. Heading H1D. A high pressure sodium vapour discharge lamp comprises a tubular elongated envelope 11 of material resistant to the attack of sodium vapour at high temperatures, a pair of electrodes 15 and 15<SP>1</SP> sealed into opposite ends, and an ionizable medium within said envelope comprising an inert starting gas and a quantity of a sodium-mercury amalgam in excess of that vaporized in operation of said lamp, the atomic fraction of sodium in the excess amalgam being in the range from 0À5 to 0.9, whereby a partial pressure of sodium is developed in the range of 30 to 1000 torr along with a partial pressure of mercury in the range of 0.1 to 5 atmospheres when the excess amalgam in said lamp envelope is maintained in liquid form at a temperature in the range of 600 to 950 C. at the coldest place in said lamp envelope. The envelope 11 of the lamp shown may be made of sintered high density polycrystalline alumina ceramic with niobium end-caps 12, 13 sealed thereto by a composition 14 comprising aluminium and calcium oxides and supporting activated tungsten wire thermionic cathodes 15 and 15<SP>1</SP> by way of metal tubes 17 and 17<SP>1</SP>, tube 17 having an exhausting and filling aperture 18 and being pinched off at 19. The arc tube support comprises a single side rod frame 21. A getter, e.g. barium powder, is pressed into channelled rings 27. The starting gas is preferably xenon at a pressure of 20 torr, but neon with from 0.1 to 1% argon may be used.
