Abstract

1428494 Gas discharge lamps GTE SYLVANIA Inc 12 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 28007/73 Heading H1D A high-pressure sodium vapour discharge lamp comprises a glass envelope 1 containing an alumina arc tube 8 filled with sodium, mercury and argon or xenon and having electrodes 13, 14 sealed in the ends, a starting heater 20 adjacent the arc tube and extending substantially along the length thereof, each end of the heater being connected to the electrode at the other end of the arc tube and a thermal switch 24 which opens to disconnect the heater when the lamp has been in operation for a certain time. By connecting the heater to the opposite ends of the tube a high ignition field is produced around each electrode which supplements the action of the heater. Instead of winding the heater around the tube 8 it can be wound on an insulating rod mounted parallel to the arc tube.
