Abstract

PURPOSE: To limit the rise of lamp voltage within 10 V, by keeping the light emitting substance of sodium in its saturated condition but keeping the buffer gas of mercury in its unsaturated condition, while the lamp is lighted.
CONSTITUTION: Polycrystalline container 1, for instance 7.6 mm in its inner diameter and 110 mm in its length, is sealed tightly at its opposite ends with frit by means of end caps 2, 3 made of polycrystalline alnmina ceramics. Niobium tubes 4, 5 are extended respectively through these end caps 2, 3 in air-tight manner, and electrodes 6, 7 are supported respectively at the top of these niobium tubes 4, 5. 2 mg of sodium, 5.8 mg of mercury, and about 20 Torr of starting rare gas of xenon are sealed in the tube. With such an arrangement, voltage rise of the lamp can be limited within 10 V, so that there is no fear of causing unexpected extinguishing of the lamp. Temperature at the coolest point in the light emitting tube is 703°C, and it is known from measurement that mercury is unsaturated but sodium is saturated.
