Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent an active metal halide from permeating into a container made of quartz glass, by providing in the container a heat-resisting cylinder packed with a staring rare gas, Hg and the metal halide.
CONSTITUTION: Electrodes 2, 2' are provided in both the end parts of the container 1 of quartz glass and coupled to metal leaves 3, 3'. The heat-resisting cylinder 4 made of a visible-light-permeable material such as Al2O3 or MgO is inserted into the container 1. The metal halide, Hg and the starting rare gas are enclosed in the cylinder 4, so that a luminous tube 6 is formed. At room temperature, the outer diameter of the cylinder 4 is smaller than the inner diameter of the luminous tube and there is a small gap between the container 1 and the cylinder 4. When the lamp is lighted on and its temperature rises, the cylinder 4 expands into contact with the inside surface of the container 1 so that the metal halide cannot go in between the container 1 and the cylinder 4.
