Abstract

687,195. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V.J. Sept. 7, 1949 [Aug. 19, 1948], No. 21921/48. Class 39(i) [Also in Group. XXXV] Apparatus for producing flashes of light comprises a condenser 9 which can be charged from a direct current source 7, 10 and rapidly discharged by the switch 5 between the main electrode 2, 11 of a gas or vapour-filled electric discharge lamp 1, the lamp including a quartz tube, which may be inside the envelope or may be part of the envelope of the lamp, arranged to constrict substantially the whole length of the discharge, and an inductive impedance 3 being included in series with the lamp in the condenser discharge path, the capacity and voltage rating of the condenser 9 and the inductance of the impedance 3 being such that the apparatus can operate with an energy dissipation per flash exceeding 35 joules per sq. cm. of internal surface of the quartz tube, measured only over the length containing the discharge path if the tube is longer than the discharge path. The lamp may be provided with auxiliary starting electrodes, for example conductors extending between the electrodes on the outer surface of the enelope. The quartz envelope is of internal diameter 4 mms.; wall thickness 2 mms., and internal length 11 cms. The electrodes consist of tungsten rods of 3 mms. diameter sealed into the ends of the envelope and terminated by strip foil seals so as to leave an arc gap of 7 cms. The filling consists of xenon at a pressure of 300 mms. of mercury. The condenser 9 is of 300ÁF capacity capable of being charged to more than 2000 volts and the impedance 3 is of 80 ÁH inductance, giving an energy dissipation per flash exceeding 68 joules per sq. cm. of internal surface of the quartz tube. According to the Provisional Specification the arc gap is 8 cms. and the impedance 3 is of 10 ÁH inductance. Specifications 9206/03, [Class 39], and 344,439 are referred to.
