Abstract
681,821. Arc discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., CLARKE, M. G., and PRIVETT, H. L. July 28, 1950 [July 29, 1949], No. 19989/49. Class 39(i) In an electric discharge device which, during operation, produces a discharge having a negative volt-ampere characteristic and which requires a reactance in series therewith, the reactance is in the form of a capacitance constituted by a light permeable metallic conductive coating 14 located on the wall 10 of the envelope, and the effective light output is obtained from, or enhanced by, a coating of luminescent material 13 which is supported on the innermost surface of the envelope. The coating 14 which forms one electrode of the device, may be outside or inside the wall Fig. 2 (not shown) and is spaced from the discharge space by dielectric material, such dielectric being the wall of the envelope when the coating is located on the outside. The second electrode 11 is located inside the envelope and is immersed in ionisable medium such as argon at a pressure of 3 mm. The second electrode may be a filament as shown or a second light-permeable conducting film.
