Abstract

643,642. Metal-vapour lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and RUFF, H. R. May 18, 1945, No. 12573. [Class 39 (i)] In a low pressure fluorescent discharge lamp 1 with a filling of argon and mercury vapour starting is facilitated by a strip 4 of conducting material extending along the envelope and terminating near the electrodes 2 and 3, and in addition these electrodes are so designed than an ionizing discharge occurs across their ends during the starting period. The conducting path is earthed and may consist of a strip of metal or of metal particles sprayed on to a roughened strip on the glass or sprayed through a mask on to the surface of the envelope previously heated above 300‹ C. The electrodes are coiled-coil tungsten filament with emissive coating and may be provided in known manner with auxiliary electrodes. The circuit comprises a stabilizing choke 7 in one of the leads to the primary winding of an autotransformer 6 from source 5, with secondary windings 8 and 9 to supply preheating current to the electrodes. In another arrangement the autotransformer provides from its secondary winding a voltage higher than that applied to the primary and in a third the transformer is so designed to dispense with the choke. Specification 537,901 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 592,246.
