Abstract

537,447. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., SCOTT, W. J. and DAVIES, L. J. March 19, 1940, No. 5067. [Class 39 (i)] In low-pressure discharge devices of the type in which one or both of the thermionic filamentary electrodes 2 are heated prior to the initiation of the discharge, a thermal responsive switch consisting of a bimetallic element 9 is connected to one of the leads of each electrode operating as cathode and short circuits the terminals of the electrodes during normal operation. The tube may have a filling of gas or vapour, such as mercury, and may be fluorescent or coated on its inner surface with a suitable phosphor. The circuit comprises a starting switch 8, which may be hand operated, or automatically operated with time delay, for connecting the electrodes in series with the main supply during the preheating period. The circuit includes a ballast reactor 7 for A.C. working or a resistance for DC working.
