Abstract
526,591. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. March 21, 1939, No. 8980. I[Class 39 (i)] To start a lamp of the type in which the electrodes are heated by a current before the discharge begins the electrodes 2 are in series with the supply and a thermal glow switch 5, such as that described in Specification 521,618, a choke 4 is also in series with the lamp and a condenser 6 is connected across the lamp to a tapping on the choke. When the circuit is closed the electrodes are heated until the heat generated by the glow in the switch 5 causes a bimetallic strip to break the circuit through the switch ; the inductive kick produced in the choke 4 and condenser 6 then starts the lamp. Further condensers 7, 8 may be arranged across the lamp. A second choke may be provided and the condenser 6 connected between tappings on it and the choke 4.
