Abstract
530,828. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. June 7, 1939, Nos. 16751 and 16753. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] The starting of a lamp on an a.c. or d.c. supply is ensured by a thermal switch and an auxiliary glow discharge device which allow the cathode or cathodes to heat up, the thermal switch then opening, an inductive kick across the discharge path being obtained from the ballast. In one form the bimetallic switch 4, Fig. 3, has its heater resistance 3 in series with the glow discharge device 5 and the main electrodes 2 ; the switch contacts close, and then open on subsequent cooling of the resistance 3. An inductance 8 may be placed in series with the device 5 and be additional to the usual inductive ballast 6. In a modification the switch and glow device are combined, the electrodes of the device 3, Fig. 2, forming a bimetal switch. The inductive resistance is in two parts 4 ; the cathodes 2 are connected across resistances 7. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 521,618.
