Abstract
614,911. Supply systems for discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CATES, J. Feb. 14, 1945, No. 3693. [Class 38 (iv)] A circuit for operating a number of discharge lamps in parallel has a separate circuit for supplying heating current in parallel to one of the electrodes of each lamp and containing a starting switch. A separate stabilizing impedance for the local arc on the electrode is provided for each electrode. The starting switch may be opened automatically to strike the lamps or after ignition. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement for three lamps in series. Fig. 3 shows one of the parallel starting circuits for a lamp D on a D.C. circuit with main stabilizing resistance R and main switch S2. A switch S3 connects an auxiliary D.C. source, which may be derived from the main terminals T1, T2, in series with an automatic switch S closed at starting, and the filamentary electrode a. The switch S1 comprises a bimetallic element M and heater H, which latter is in the main circuit. Where the supply is A.C., a transformer may supply the electrode heating current. The stabilizing resistances R1 and R2 may be tungsten lamps. A separate starting circuit, as described, may be provided for each of the electrodes of a tube. The unheated electrode need not be filamentary.
