Abstract

618,256. Supply systems for discharge apparatus. KIRCHNER, K. F. May 20, 1946, No. 15177. Convention date, June 1, 1945. [Class 38 (iv)] A fluorescent lamp 6 or other discharge device, having a striking voltage in excess of the voltage of a D.C. supply source 7, 8, is started by the voltage induced in a choke 15, Fig. 1, or autotransformer 16, Fig. 2, upon cessation of the charging current which flows into a condenser 9 at the moment of closing a starting switch 14. A resistive ballast 12 of large positive temperature coefficient, such as an incandescent lamp, stabilizes the lamp current under running conditions. A leak resistor 11 ensures discharge of the condenser when the switch 14 is open. The circuit of Fig. 1 is particularly advantageous when the supply 7, 8 is subject to wide voltage fluctuations, the choke condenser combination repeatedly feeding the lamp with high voltage pulses when the supply volts fall below the running volts of the lamp. The circuit of Fig. 2 may be modified by interchanging the connections of the ballast and condenser to the terminals 17, 18 of the transformer, or by connecting the lamp directly across the condenser and connecting terminal 19 of the transformer to an external starting electrode adjacent the lamp.
