Abstract
616,654. Control systems for space discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 17, 1946, No. 27874. Convention date, Sept. 17, 1945, [Class 38 (iv)] A rapid starter for a discharge lamp 1 comprises a glow discharge device 7 series connected to the coil 15 of an electromagnetic switch 8 through its normally closed contacts 12. The discharge device is capable of carrying an appreciable current so that when the switch opens the inductance 5 provides a high starting voltage between the electrodes 2. A condenser 9 may be shunted across the discharge device and switch to limit the value and prolong the period of the voltage kick. A lock-out switch with resistance heater 20 and normally closed contacts, such as two bimetallic members 18, 19, may be included in the starter circuit to operate should the lamp fail to light after a predetermined period.
