Abstract
1340872 Starting discharge lamps SIMPLEX-CIRCULUME Ltd 18 Jan 1971 [21 March 1970] 13754/70 Addition to 1210153 Heading H2H A starting circuit for an electric discharge lamp 10 disclosed in Specification 1,210,153 is modified by providing a magnetic reed switch 15 in series with a capacitor 14 across terminals L, N of an A.C. supply, the branch being connected to a tapping B of a choke 12 as shown, the contacts of the reed switch 15 being normally open but closed by magnetic flux in a coil 16 in series with a resistor 17 which are connected across the terminals 11a, 11b of the lamp 10. In operation, prior to ignition of the lamp, the voltage developed across the terminals 11a, 11b, causes, via the operation of the coil 16, the reed contacts to close at or around the maximum voltage of each A.C. half cycle, producing current pulses through the portion AB of the choke 12 and high voltage pulses in the portion BC to ignite the lamp 10. Upon ignition, the voltage across terminals 11a, 11b is insufficient to cause further closing of the reed switch 15.
