Abstract

661,791. Control systems for space discharge. lamps. VAUGHAN, C. H., and GRAHAM & CO., Ltd.,. A. April 6, 1950 [April 12, 1949], No. 9902/49. [Class 38 (iv)] A starting arrangement for one or several series-connected discharge lamps L1, L2, having filamentary electrodes, includes a thermal switch having a resistance heater HW and normally-closed contacts bm to provide the time delay for preheating and an electromagnetic relay having an operating coil R and contacts r1-r4 to obtain rapid interruption of the preheating circuit and so ensure a high voltage pulse to start the lamps, the arrangement being such that upon connection to the supply, contacts bm open under delay to remove the short-circuit on relay coil R, thereby causing the contacts r2, r3 to open, r4 to close and so short-circuit the resistance heater and r1 to open and so disconnect contacts bm, which eventually reclose. The relay will continue to re-operate immediately until the lamp starts or contacts bm reclose, whereupon the preheating cycle will repeat. The invention operates from A.C. or D.C. The voltage pulse in the latter case may be obtained from the relay coil, instead of from an inductance in series with the ballast resistance B.
